Blending Tradition and Modernity in African Rock Music: Arka’n Metal Band in Focus
The rock renaissance is on in Africa. From Cairo to Cape Town, and from Dakar to Dar es Salaam. A growing number of the youth generation are discovering this eccentric phenomenon. There are, however, many misconceptions to contend with. Aside allegations of being “devilish”, it is also commonplace to hear several commentators dismiss rock music as “UnAfrican”. This attitude, however, stems from a misrepresentation of the roots of the genre and the character of its current resurgence in Africa. Rock in Africa is presently being treated through an innovative, experimental phase. This phase features a hybridization of influences both traditional and modern leading to a fluid product that merits the label, Afro-Rock. A number of artists and bands are defining this territory, and notable among them is the collective Arka’n.
